Define legislative?
Legislation is a law or a set of laws that have been passed by Parliament. The word is also used to describe the act of making a new law.
Primary legislation
Primary legislation is an Act that has been passed by the Parliament. Secondary legislation can make small changes to an Act. The Act must say what changes can be made to it by secondary legislation and what process the secondary legislation will follow.
Government Bill
Suggestion which originates from the government of the day
Public Bill
Affects whole/most of the country
Private Bill
Affects individuals or corporations only
Private Member’s Bill
A private member’s bill is a bill (proposed law) introduced into a legislature by a legislator who is not acting on behalf of the executive branch.
Green paper
Document for consultation, has proposed elements that will then be analysed by professionals
White Paper
Confirmed form of the Green paper, it holds firm proposals for new law
Parliamentary Counsel
Parliamentary counsel (special lawyers) are employed by the government to draft legislation and use legal language to put forward the ideas of the government.
Royal assent
Royal assent is the method by which a monarch formally approves an act of the legislature, either directly or through an official acting on the monarch’s behalf.
