Paper 2 Revision L2 DES flashcards
Name a greenhouse gas.
Methane, carbon dioxide, or water
What do plants compete for?
Light, water and minerals, and space
What is interdependence?
All organisms in a food web depending upon each other
What is a transect?
An imaginary line used as a part of systematic sampling
What carbon conversion occurs in respiration?
Glucose to carbon dioxide
What are peat bogs an important store of?
Carbon
What is transpiration?
The evaporation of water at the surfaces of the spongy mesophyll cells in leaves, followed by loss of water vapour through the stomata
Name the process by which water is absorbed into plant roots.
Osmosis
Give two uses of water in plants.
- Photosynthesis
- Support
What is percolation?
The movement of water through the soil itself
What is surface run-off?
Water that runs along the surface of the ground after heavy precipitation
What do we mean by the term ‘population’?
A group of organisms of the same species living in the same place at the same time
What do we mean by the term ‘community’?
All of the organisms living in the same habitat
What is an ecosystem?
The interaction of a community of living organisms with the non-living parts of their environment
What is a stable community?
One where all the species and environmental factors are in balance so that population sizes remain fairly constant
What is a quadrat?
A square frame of known area used for sampling the abundance and distribution of slow or non-moving organisms
What occurs during precipitation?
Water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet, or snow when clouds get heavy
What are some programmes to reduce the negative effects of humans on ecosystems?
- Breeding programmes for endangered species
- Protection and regeneration of rare habitats
- Reintroduction of field margins and hedgerows
- Reduction of deforestation and carbon dioxide emissions
- Recycling resources rather than dumping waste
