lithium ions give what colour flame
red flame
sodium ions give what colour flame
yellow flame
potassium ions give what colour flame
lilac flame
calcium ions give what colour flame
orange - red flame
copper ions give what colour flame
blue - green flame
aluminium creates what colour precipitate
white at first and then colourless
calcium creates what colour precipitate
white precipitate
copper creates what colour precipitate
blue precipitate
iron (II) creates what colour precipitate
green precipitate
iron (III) creates what colour precipitate
brown precipitate
How to test if a substance contains ammonium ions
Add sodium hydroxide to a mystery solution. If ammonia is given off test it by holding a piece of damp red litmus paper over it and it will turn blue. Ammonia has a strong smell.
What colour precipitate will form from chlorides
white precipitate of silver chloride
What colour precipitate will form from bromides
cream precipitate of silver bromide
What colour precipitate will form from iodides
yellow precipitate of silver iodide
Test for carbonates using dilute acid
Add some dilute acid. If carbonate ions are present the mixture will fizz - this is because the carbonate will react with the acid to produce co2 gas.
