Q

How to test if a substance contains ammonium ions

A

Add sodium hydroxide to a mystery solution. If ammonia is given off test it by holding a piece of damp red litmus paper over it and it will turn blue. Ammonia has a strong smell.

Q

Test for carbonates using dilute acid

A

Add some dilute acid. If carbonate ions are present the mixture will fizz - this is because the carbonate will react with the acid to produce co2 gas.

Q

Test for sulphate ions using barium chloride solution

A

add some dilute hydrochloric acid to test the same. then add some barium chloride. If sulphate ions are present a white precipitate of barium sulphate will form
