Skill
A learned action or behaviour with the intention of bringing about predetermined results.
Ability
Inherited from your parents, abilities are stable traits that determine an indivual’s potential to learn or acquire skills.
Basic skills - Complex skills
Basic skills (eg walking) - Few decisions to be made - Tend to be taught to a beginner - Few decisions actually affect the success of the movement
Complex (eg high jump)
- Complex decision making
- Taught to experienced
- Lots of decisions to be made in order to be successful.
Open skill - Closed skill
Open skills
- a skill which is performed in a certain way to deal with a changing or unstable environment.
Closed skill
- A skill which is not affected by the environment or performers within it. It tends to be done the same way each time.
Self-paced skill - Externally-paced skill
Self-paced skill
- The sill is started when the performer decides to start it. The speed, rate or pace of the skill is controlled by the performer.
Externally-paced skill
- The skill is started because of an external factor. The speed, rate or pace of an external factors.
Gross skill - Fine skill
Gross skill (eg kicking a ball) - A skill that involves big movements of the body and use a large muscle group.
Fine skill (eg dart throw) - Involves small precise movements and small muscle groups.
Performance goal / Outcome goal
Performance goal - Personal standards to be achieved without comparison with other performers.
Outcome goal - Judging the end result by comparison with other performers.
SMART targets
S - Specific M - Measurable A - Achievable R - Realistic T - Time-bound
