paper 2 Flashcards
what is plasticity
suggests something is flexible and can change and adapt, for example muscles
what is synaptic bridging and pruning (plasticity)
pruning - connections are lost due to the lack of use
bridging - new synapses are formed and created through use and new stimuli
what is functional recovery?
allows victims of brain damage to recover some abilities, healthy parts of the brain take place of the damaged parts and act as there action.
what is axonal sprouting?
growth of new nerve cells which connect to other damaged nerve cells to form new connections.
what is denervation supersensitivity?
when axons that do similar jobs act at a higher level to compensate for the ones that are lost.
what is recruitment of homologous areas?
similar areas on the opposite side of the brain can be used to make sure tasks can still get done.
evaluation points of functional recovery
research support - Maguire
real world application in development of neurorehabilitation
plasticity may reduce with age
functional recovery may differ depending on individuals educational attainment
negative affects
what is ID, EGO and superego
id is the impulsive part of your personality that is driven by pleasure and repulsed by pain, the superego is the judgmental and morally correct part of your personality, and the ego is the conscious part of your personality that mediates between the id and the superego and makes decisions.
what is introspection?
Wilhelm Wundt, introspection is looking at oneself and examining personal thoughts and emotions. The word ‘introspection’ literally means ‘to look inward.
