Paper 1 science Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
It is the way which plants make their own food by using water, oxygen and CO2
What is chlorophyll
It is a green coloured substance that is in the plants
What things are inside the leaf and what are they for?
Upper and lower epidemis = to protect the cells in the leaf
Waxy layer= to keep the cells from drying out
Palisade layer= cells that do most of photosynthesis
Spongy layer = has lots of spaces of air and it does less of photosynthesis
Vein =carries water to the cells of the leaf
What are the types of nutrients?
Protein Carbohydrate Fat Vitamins Minerals Fibre Water
What is a diet?
It is the amount of different nutrients you eat daily
What is a deficiency disease?
A disease caused by the lack of a specific nutrient
What is the Human digestive system?
The system that helps us absorb nutrients from food, it is made up of mouth, oesophagus, gail bladder, pancreas, large intestine, small intestine, apendix and anus
What are the parts of the teeth and give their functions
Emanel=strong part of the teeth containing calcium
Dentine = layer containing living cells, not as strong as emanel
Pulp cavity = contains blood vessels and nerves
Fibres = help to hold the tooth in the jawbone
What are enzymes?
A natural catalyst that helps break down food
What is the human cilculatory system?
A system that pumps blood around the body and it is made up of the lungs and the heart
What is the heart?
It is what mainly pumps blood around the body
What is blood made up of?
Red blood cells = tranport oxygen
White blood cells = destroy invading micro-organisms
Platelets help red blood cells to clot
Plasma transports dissolved substances such as sugar
What are blood vessels
Tubes that carry blood around the body
How can particle theory be used
To explain the properties of the three states of matter
What is difusion
When particles do random movements and spread evenly
