PAPER 1 - required practicals Flashcards
1
Q
- SHC whats the aim
A
measure the specific heat capacity of a sample of material.
2
Q
- SHC method
A
- put IMMERSION HEATER into HOLE at the top of block
- put THERMOMETER into smaller hole
- INSULATE the block by wrapping in cotton wool
- RECOD TEMP of block
- connect heater to powerpack and joulemeter
- after ten minutes the temperature will still rise even though the heater has been turned off and then it will begin to cool. Record the highest temperature that it reaches and calculate the temperature rise during the experiment.
3
Q
- SHC hazards
A
- hot immersion heater burns skin
4
Q
- thermal insulation - whats the aim
A
compare the effectiveness of different materials as thermal insulators
5
Q
- thermal insulation - method
A
- put small beaker into large beaker
- fill small w hot water from kettle
- put cardboard over beakers as lid w hole for thermometer
- record temp of water in small beaker and start stop watch
- record temp of water every 2 mins for 20 mins
- repeat steps but each time park the space between small and large with insulating material
- plot temp on y axis and time of x axis
6
Q
- thermal insulation - hazards
A
boiling water - burn skin
7
Q
- thermal insulation - whats the aim of the other thermal insulation practical and how is it different
A
- aim: compare effectiveness of different thicknesses of thermal insualtors
- same as last one but this time wrap the beaker in newspaper and do the experiment and then keep repeating with more and more layers of newspaper
8
Q
- resistance - whats the aim
A
investigate how changing the length of the wire affects its resistance
9
Q
- resistance - method
A
- connect circuit (voltmeter,ameter,cell)
- add 2 crocodile clips to thin resistance wire at 10cm apart
- record readings on ameter and voltmeterr
- then repeat and add 10cm on every time
- use results to calculate the resistance of each length of wire and plot on a graph
10
Q
- resistance - results evaluation
A
longer the wire the higher resistance
11
Q
- resistance - hazards
A
wire gets hot - burns skin
12
Q
- I-V characteristics - aim
A
investigate the relationship between current and potential difference for a resistor, bulb and diode.
13
Q
- I-V characteristics - method for ohmic conductor and filament lamp
A
- set up equitment (battery, ameter, voltmeter, variable resistor and then either resistor or lamp in voltmeter bit)
- record current and voltage
- ajust the variable resistor so new current and voltage each time
- swap leads on battery so readings on ameter and voltmeter is negative
- record current and voktage 5 more times ajusting each time to get a new answer
- lot graph of current against pd
14
Q
- I-V characteristics - for a diode and hazards
A
- set up equitment (battery not higher than 5 , ameter, voltmeter, variable resistor and diode)
- ajust varibale resistor and record 4 more times with new readings on am and volt each time
- swape leads so negative and repeat 5 more times
- plot current against pd
- hazard - wire may heat up so cuation you dont wanna burn yourself
15
Q
- density - aim
A
measure density of different materials
