What should the paragraph structure be ?
Start with creating a ‘big picture’ and then focus on ‘one or two people’ and finally write about a specific ‘small detail’, throughout the piece you can include one sentence paragraphs to make areas more dramatic.
What should you include in the ‘big picture’ paragraph ?
A detailed description of the setting and background of your story, and vocabulary specific to the atmosphere you want to create.
What can you write about in the ‘one or two people’ paragraph?
A person or group of people - described in detail - and their actions and mannerisms to further develop the atmosphere.
What should you write about in the ‘small detail’ paragraph ?
Find an object that is maybe meaningful to the protagonist or could be the pinnacle of the story and the key to unlocking small details throughout the piece, and describe it in detail.
What structures can you use within and throughout your piece ?
Cyclical structure - link the beginning to the end, a title - invoke a sense of mystery in the reader meaning right from the start they want to know what happens, sentence patterns - to create rhythm, and extended metaphors / similes.
What can you write to start off the story if you’re stuck ?
Start with ‘as’ followed by an action, use the sound of the surroundings (onomatopoeia), a question can cause a stream of ideas in both you and the reader, start with a single word and try and come up with ideas related to that, or even use a number.
What sentence can help us get into a characters thoughts ?
A question.
What type of sentence is used to add extra information ?
A bracketed sentence - almost like a whisper to the reader.
What can you use to build a detailed description ?
Sentence, colon, list of three.
How could you help to explain a more complex situation to the reader ?
Use sentences beginning with ‘even/although/whilst/if’ to explore ideas.
What is the purpose of a minor sentence ?
To add mystery or to focus the reader on a specific aspect.
When would it be appropriate to use a single line of dialogue ?
Try not to use it too often - but when you want to move the story on in a dramatic way.
What is a short dramatic sentence used for ?
To change the pace of areas of the story.
What is an anaphora ?
Where you repeat the same word or phrase in adjacent sentences to build rhythm and tension.
What are the SOSMAP language techniques ?
Similes, Onomatopoeia, Strong adjectives, Metaphors, Alliteration, and Personification.
When choosing the vocabulary for your piece what should you consider ?
Make sure it’s specific to the situation, use sophisticated vocabulary to elevate the atmosphere and story, and make sure descriptions and dialogues and words are appropriate for the atmosphere you’re creating.
What is a noun ?
The name of a person, place, thing or idea(love).
What is an adjective ?
A word used descriptively.
What is a verb ?
An action that you can do with your body your heart(panic) or your head(consider).
What is an adverb ?
A word used to describe specifically how an action is done.
When would you use abstract nouns ?
To make your writing sound more sophisticated - the name of an idea.
