Narrative hook
a literary technique used in the first sentence to engage the reader’s curiosity
Zooming in
to notice and give special attention to something in particular ( a move from general to specific )
Zooming out
to focus on the entire scene in general ( a move from specific to general)
First person narrative
a narrative perspective where the story is told from the character’s own perspective ( pronoun ‘i’ )
Third person omniscient
a narrator who knows the thoughts of everyone and everything - they fan see everything happening - bird’s eye view of the story
Third person limited
a narrative perspective where the narrator only knows the thoughts and feelings of one character
Dialogue
a conversation
Foreshadowing
a literary device where the writer hints or what may come later
Contrast
a difference between two things
Climax
the most intense part of the story /where tension rises
Flashback
a thought or scene from the past that disrupts the chronological order
Dramatic irony
when the audience/ reader knows more about the situation than the character.
Plot point
an incident or event that ‘hooks’ the reader into the action
