Paper 1- Memory Flashcards
What Is your Short-term memory(STM)?
Memory for events in the present or immediate past.
What Is your Long-term memory(LTM)?
Memory for events that have happened in the more distant past.
What does a model of memory represent and what does it help us to understand?
It is a representation of memory and it helps us understand how our memory works and what our memory may ‘look like’.
Who created the Multi-store model of memory?
Atkinson and Shiffrin
What hypothesis did Atkinson and shiffrin make?
That our memory consists of different components(parts) and processes(ways of working).
Define Coding.
The type or format of information being stored.
Define Capacity.
The amount of information that is stored.
Define Duration.
The length of time information is held for.
Describe and briefly evaluate the multi-store model of memory.
The Multi-Store model of memory is a representation of memory and it helps us to understand how our memory works and what it may “look like”
It’s split up into 3 different components; sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory.
Sensory memory is the initial brief storage of sensory information, such as visual, auditory and tactile input. It can hold a very large amount of information but its duration is very limited and only lasts a fraction of a second.
Short-term memory is the information from the sensory register that is attended to. It mainly holds acoustic information. It can only hold 7+/-2 units of information and its duration is limited as it only lasts 18-30 seconds.
When Information is rehearsed in the short-term memory it can be transferred to the long-term memory store. Information in the long-term memory can last a life-time and can hold unlimited amounts of information.
The model suggests that the transfer of information from one store to the next is not automatic, but requires attention and effort. It has been influential in understanding memory, but it has also been criticized for its simplicity and inability to fully explain all aspects of memory.
