What is AO1?
Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to: maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response
Use textual references, including quotes, to support and illustrate interpretations
What’s AO2?
Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meaning and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate

What’s a verb
Describes what a person or thing does or what happens
What does a verb describe? (4)
An action
An event
A situation
A change
What are modal verbs?
Combine with other verbs to express necessity, possibility, intention or ability
E.g. must, shall, should, would etc
What are adverbs? (3)
Used to give information about a verb, adjective, or other adverb.
They can make the meaning of them stronger or weaker and often appear between the subject and it’s verb
What are adjectives?
Words that describe a noun, giving extra information about it
What’s a pronoun? (2)
Used in a place of a noun that is already known or had already been mentioned. This is often done in order to avoid repeating the noun.
What’s a preposition?
A word such as after, in, to, on, with. Prepositions are usually used in front of nouns or pronouns and they show the relationship between the noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence
What’s a determiner? (3)
A word that introduces a nouns.
The determiner ‘the’ is sometimes known as the definite article
The determiner ‘a’ (or an) as the indefinite article
What’s an exclamation/ interjection? (2)
A word or phrase that expresses a string emotion.
Often stand on their own, and in writing they’re usually followed by an exclamation mark rather than a full stop
