Qualities Of God BT

A

Omnipotent (all-powerful) - Supreme being who is all-powerful, God has unlimited authority

Omniscient - all knowing
Omnipresent - everywhere

Benevolent (kind/loving) - Uses his power to do good

  • shows his love by creating humans and caring for them
  • showed love by sending down his son (Jesus)

Just - just judge of human kind, God will never support injustice and prejudice
- will judge on judgement day (heaven or hell)

Trinity (Oneness of God) BT

A

Christians belief
- three persons in the one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Father - Creator of all life, acts as a father to his children
Son - God Incarnate through Jesus, fully god and fully human
Holy Spirit - unseen power, guides and sustains life on Earth

A

angel appeared to Mary to tell her she was pregnant explaining it was not to be an ordinary child

  • This had occurred through the Holy Spirit
  • Mary conceived Jesus without sex (evidence that Jesus was the son of God)

Son of God, Messiah, Christ BT

A

Jesus was fully God and fully human, which explains his miracles and resurrection

  • His words have great authority (word of God)
  • Jews expected a Messiah who was a warrior king
  • Spiritual rather than political
  • Jesus told his disciples not to call him the anointed one or Messiah because he’s opponents, might have gotten him arrested for blasphemy.
  • he finally admitted to being the Messiah when the High Priest asked on this trial before death
  • he is often called Christ (‘anointed one’)
  • when Jesus was baptised a voice from heaven spoke and dove (the holy sprit) appeared

The Crucifixion BT

A
  • sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate
  • Forgave those who crucified him, and promised one of the men crucified with him heaven
  • was buried in a cave - like tomb
  • Fully God and fully human so suffered pain
  • Roman officer acknowledged Jesus was innocent, and said he was the Son of God
  • Roman Guards made sure Jesus was dead
  • Burial was rushed because of the Sabbath (holy day for worship)

Jesus sacrifice on the cross gives hop to Christens that their sins will be forgiven if they sincerely repent

  • God understands human suffering because Jesus, who is God, experienced it.
  • Christians accept that suffering is part of life, just as it was a part of Jesus’ life
  • Teaches Christians that forgiveness is possible
  • Teaches that God loves them

resurrection BT

  • Early Sunday morning, female followers including Mary, visited the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body
  • Jesus’ body was not there
  • Angles told the women to spread the word that Jesus had risen from the dead
  • Over the next few days, Jesus appeared to many people including Mary and his disciples. He told them that he had risen from the dead as he had predicted before the crucifixion
    ascension - 40 days after resurrection, returned to Father in heaven
  • shows Jesus is with God
  • shows power of good over evil
  • means sins will be forgiven
  • Christians will too be resurrected if they accept Jesus, so there is no need to fear death
  • shows there is life after death
  • prepare for God to send the Holy Spirt for comfort and guidance

Christian Responses to The creation story of Genesis BT

Literal - Creation story happened exactly as described (6 days)

Linguistic - misunderstandings in the language (“day” in Hebrew doesn’t mean a day in English)

Mythical - God explains that God made the world and why, but it does not explain fully how

Scientific - Maybe God caused the Big bang.

When will resurrection happen? BT

A

When:
Some Christians belief they are resurrected soon after death
Other belief they are resurrected on Day of Judgement

How:
Catholics and Orthodoxy belief there physical (best version of its self) body and spirit will be resurrected
Others belief it will just be spiritual.

A belief in the resurrection…

  • Gives confidence in the face of death
  • Inspires to live their life as God expects
  • Shows how much God loves them
  • Means life after death is real
  • Gives hope of a future with Jesus

  • belief they will be resurrected and receive eternal life
  • gift from God and is dependent on faith
  • judged by god (Heaven or Hell)
  • Some belief judgement will happen soon after death, Others belief it will happen on Judgement Day

God will judge them on their actions and faith in God

  • Parable of the sheep and goats describes how God will judge people (In serving others, they are serving Jesus
  • Faith in Jesus and following his teachings is essential to reach heaven

Heaven

  • either physical or spiritual place
  • a reward for faith and actions

Purgatory (Only Catholic Belief)
- Temporary place of punishment, where sins are cleansed in-order to enter heaven

Hell

  • state of existence without God
  • eternal torment ruled over by Satan
  • Being cut off from the possibility of God
  • Awaits people who did not worship God or follow teachings

Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man BT

A

A rich man does not help a poor man called Lazarus. Lazarus goers to heaven whilst the rich man goes to hell. Once dead the rich man cannot go back to right his wrong. Christians should follow the teachings of Jesus, and care for other people, in order to get to heaven after death

A

Jesus taught that Judgement Day is like a fishing net that fishermen put out to the sea which catches all types of fish; the fishermen then separate the good fish from the bad. This teaches that the good will be separated from the bad

Sin, Free Will, Original Sin BT

A

Sin

  • Thoughts or actions that separates humans from God
  • Some sins are Illegal
  • Other are legal but against God

Free Will

  • Humans should use freedom to do actions God approves of
  • God provides guidance on how to live (Ten Commandments)

Original Sin
- we are born with a built in tendency to sin
- come from Adam and Eve who committed the first sin
This caused separation from God

Salvation (redemption)

  • to be saved from sin and its consciences and to be granted eternal life with God
  • repairs the damage caused by sin

Salvation through Good work
- Old Testament makes it clear that salvation comes through faith in God and obeying God’s laws in Bible

Salvation through Grace
- Given freely by God through Holy Spirit, through faith in Jesus and God. Does not have to be earned/deserved. Free gift of God’s love

Reconciliation is the fixing of relationships after they have been broken down or ended

Working for Reconciliation

  • Christians believe humans were reconciled to God through Jesus’ death and resurrection
  • This helped restore the relationship between God and humanity which has been broken through sin [atonement]
  • Gospel of Matthew teaches that Christians should be reconciled to each other
  • Reconciliation is therefore and important part of the Church’s work. This might involve anything from trying to restore relationships between people, to work for peace between different groups or nations
