Doctor Ferreiro
“Obedecer, por obedecer. Sin pensarlo, solo lo hacen gentes como usted”
Message from Guillermo that says those who obey and do everything that the government or the church say, without thinking or questioning it are bad like Vidal, whilst those like Ofelia and the Maquis who don’t just simply follow the rules of society are good.
Doctor ferreiro

Fauno a Ofelia
“No comais ni bebais nada durante vuestra estancia”
Rules imposed by the Faun for Ofelia to follow wen doing her 3 trials. This shows the inherent obedience in our society, even Ofelia who is known for her disobedience has to follow the Fauns rules. The fact that she doesn’t shows her innate disobedience. However when she does disobey there are grave consequences. Maybe lesson to people and audience to obey ?

Mercedes
“yo era invisible para usted”
Mercedes to Vidal. Shows the plight of women during the dictatorship where they are seen as inferior. Ironic because she is the reason for the maquis attacking the mill and in the end she is visible to him and has power of him.. Also because she is spying on the fascists she has to be invisible
Mercedes
“Mi abuela decia que con los faunos hay que andarse con cuidado. “
Mercedes used to believe in fairytales herselves. However due to the war she as lost her innocence and imagination. However she is willing to converse with Ofelia and shows a close relationship between them. Contrast to Carmen who tells ofelia to stop imaging. Mercedes wants ofelia to maintain her innocence for as long as possible
