Panoramic Radiography Flashcards
Pan radiographs form a curved, in focus picture, what’s the in focus area that’s taken against the image receptor called?
Focal trough
What’s a ghost image?
Eg. The x-ray still passes through the left side even if the image receptor is on the right
- creates a ‘shadow image’ over the top
- less perceivable image
In a ghost image does the image become:
1) larger or smaller & why
2) higher or lower & why
3) what side of the image will it be on
4) blurred/clear
1) larger (divergence of beam)
2) higher (upward 8degree angle)
3) opposite side
4) blurred
What are common positioning errors??
- chin not positioned correctly
- distance/angulation
- no moving during pan
What’re some advantages of panoramic radiography?
- shows whole dentition in 1 image
- time efficient = lower radiation dosage
- well tolerated by patents with gag reflexes
What’re some disadvantages of panoramic radiography?
- only structures in the focal trough are in focus
- some overlapping of teeth (harder caries detection)
- technique is necessary
- superimposition of soft tissue -> misinterpretation
- long exposure (patient cannot move)
What’re some indications for Panoramic Radiography?
- bony lesions not completely shown in IOs
- patients with neglected dentition
- wisdom teeth assessment
- ortho assessment
- mandibular fractures
