upper ab pain
vomitting
epigastric or diffuse abdominal tenderness
biochemical diagnosis of acute pancreatitis
elevated pancreatic enzymes, amylase and lipase
elevated wbc, liver enzymes, bilirubin, hyperglycaemia, hypocalcaemia
causes of acute pancreatitis
alcoholism
cholelithiasis= gallstones

endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography
causes of chronic pancreatitis
alcoholism microlithisasis = crystal calcifications idiopathic rare : hereditary, hyperparathyroidism, obstruction of main pancreatc duct
clinical diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis
lab tests are normal
structural abnormalities of x ray/CT
ercp can show abnormalities
most sensitive test is secretin test
treatment of pancreatitis
IV fluids
dietary restriction: fat, protein
