Pan scenario review Flashcards
1
Q
Dentist: Justify why we need to take a PAN?
A
Allows us to asses:
- Trauma-jaw fractures
- 3rd molar assessment
- Extensive disease
- Suspected large lesions
- Tooth development & Eruption
- Retained root tips
- TMJ pain
2
Q
Explain the Benefits of a PAN to Ms. Jones
A
- Mrs. Jones We never take an x-ray without assessing your situation first.
- X-ray is only taken if we expect it will provide us information we need to treat you properly.
- In this case we need…
3
Q
What are benefits for patients
A
- Provides information that we don’t have clinically
- Allows us to make an accurate diagnosis
- Better treatment outcome
- fewer complications
4
Q
Radiological Risk consists of 3 parts. what are they?
A
- Exposure
- Dose
- Risk
5
Q
Radiation Dose
A
- the image involves exposure to radiation
- Dental radiation dose
- small compared to other medical imaging procedures
- equivalent exposure in everyday life
- cell phone
- rocks
- outside in the sun
6
Q
Radiological Risk
A
- no immediate harmful effects are expected
- long term risk of harm from this amount of radiation is 1 in a million
- 1 in a million is the same risk as driving 100 miles by car
- living in NYC for 2 days and exposed to air pollution
7
Q
Promote your best practices
A
- Receptor
- ¼ the exposure compared to films we used to use
- Metal Insert
- changes shape and size of x-ray beam that would normally come from cone
- reduces dose by over half
- some offices do not use this technology
- Alignment devices
- reduce chance of retakes
- Only order images that will provide info that we do not have from clinical eval
8
Q
Patient Prep
A
- remove
- earrings
- necklaces
- napkin chains
- hearing aids
- hairpins
- eye wear
- removable intraoral appliances
- Place lead apron w/o thyroid collar
- low around neck
9
Q
Unit Prep
A
- Place appropriate barrier
- yellow chin stop positioned up
- not flush with chin rest bottom
- adjust unit height
10
Q
Patient Instructions
A
- Hold handle bars for support
- rest chin on chin rest
- place cotton rolls b/w incisors if dentate
- Adjust Frankfort & Mid sagittal plane
- Close template and forehead supports
- recheck midline
- Instruct patient to swallow and leave tongue against roof of. mouth
- remain still while machine rotates
- approx 20 seconds
11
Q
Frankfort plane
A
- imaginary line from:
- infraorbital ridge to tragus
- Visual:
- to of ala of nose to tragus
12
Q
Mid-Sagittal Plane
A
- aka horizontal positioning
- imaginary line that divides the face into equal Right and Left parts
-
Center light b/w eyes
- NOT nose
13
Q
Pan: Advantages
A
- broad coverage of facial bones and teeth
- Quick and easy
- Works for patients w/limited mouth opening or can’t tolerate intraoral imaging
- Low radiation dose
- Good for patient education
14
Q
Pan: Disadvantages
A
- lower resolution than intraoral radigraphs
- Distortion
- Magnification
- Superimposition
- requires accurate patient positioning
15
Q
Image Distortion: Metal ring example
A
- In focal trough
- normal round ring
- Posterior to focal trough
- flattened ring
- Anterior to focal trough
- ovoid ring
