WHAT IS PAN-AFRICANISM
Philosophy that affirms rich cult heritage of Af societies->critical theory/discourse.
Advocates achieving true freedom for Af race->through unity, solidarity and self-reliance.
Movement aiming to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity bet all indigenous and diaspora ethnic groups of Af decent.
Struggle for Af ID->bc defined by slave trade .:propaganda.
Promotes the pol, socioeconomic +cult liberation of all Af pp->the systemic racism brought by colonialism has led Af pp to poverty
MOTIVATION FOR PAN-AFRICANISM
> Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade: .slave trade began through Arabs, seeing Af pp as strong commodity .slavery then moved to East (Asia)->first slaves to China as warriors-> Japan made human contract for slavery .P-A is biased against slavery.
Colonialism: .disrupted a lot of Af ec potential (of the prod of goods, mark, traders, transport, social amenities and pattern of urbanization) .col is a form of imperialism (bc dispossessed other groups of their pot capital+ ben the minority (Eur settlers).
Neo-Colonialism: .use of ec, pol, cult, or other pressures to control or influence other countries (esp dependencies) .economies are conflict ridden and struggling bc still in debt to former colonisers.
ORIGINS AND EVOLUTION OF PAN-AFRICANISM
Diaspora has 2 constituents:>historical: Af pp +heritage taken for slavery. >Contemporary: pp who relocated to Eur w/i last century.
Af have dying sense Africanism->bc growing sense of American and Eur consciousness (through ed institutions)
Developed as pol movement in 20th cent->through efforts of Af in diaspora (Sylvester-Williams and Du Bois).
Modern movement gone through 3 phases: >convening of P-A congress in Europe: (bet 1919 and 45); demand equality and liberation of black territories. >institutionalization of the P-A idea: through formation of OAU in ‘63=AU 2002. > Afro-centric P-A: modern variety of 20th cent P-A championed by Du Bois; tried rally for change, but lacked radical edge
KEY ASSUMPTIONS OF A PAN-AFRICAN VIEW OF INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY
Critique and response to Af historical experience w/ western mercantilism and capitalist expansion
Africa evolved to be organic part of western capitalism->bc of its experience with slavery, col+neo-col .:condemned to dependent and peri position in system.
PRINCIPLES OF A PAN-AFRICANIST PERSPECTIVE OF IPE
> pol unity: a precondition for the creation of the independent Af economies->to deal with the adversity of Balkanization (the manipulation and domination of MNC (eg))
delinking + auto-centric development: Af should extricate itself as organic part of western cap-> in order to make choices based on needs, priorities and values of its pp not glob capital.
collective self-reliance: relying primarily on internal resources + dev the capacity to address own problems+ meet needs of pp->w/o external help that leads to unwarranted influence.
cult liberation: rediscover own cult, norms, principles that disregarded through western teachings
