Palpation in Recumbancy Flashcards
Four factors of palpation of limbs in recumbency
- Standardized Procedure!
- Prevents overlooked problems
- Distal to proximal for joint isolation
- Orthopedic exam
Order of palpation of the forelimb during recumbent palpation (4)
- Digits
- Carpus
- Elbow
- Shoulder
Assessment of the digits during recumbent palpation
THIS IS THE SAME IN BOTH FORELIMBS
AND HINDLIMBS
- Nail beds & pads
- Phalange bones & joints (including
flexion and extension)
Assessment of the carpus (forelimb) and tarsus (hindlimb) during recumbent palpation
- ROM
- Effusion
- Pain
- Crepitus
Assessment of the Elbow during forelimb recumbent palpation
- ROM (flex/extend abduct/adduct)
- Antebrachial rotation
Assessment of the Shoulder during forelimb recumbent palpation
Provocation Test: Flex Shoulder + Extend Elbow
Order of palpation of the hindlimb during recumbent palpation (4)
- Digits
- Tarsus
- Stifle
- Hip
Assessment of the Stifle during hindlimb recumbent palpation
- Flex, extend, and rotate the stifle to
assess for patella luxation - Patella tendon pathway should be strait
Cranial cruciate ligament assessment during hindlimb recumbency palpation
Drawer test and tibial compression
Test for hip dysplasia or subluxation
Ortolani test
