- External occipital protuberance
- Nuchal ligament
- SPs of C7-T12
Insertion:
- Acromion/spine of scapula
- Lateral 1/3 of clavicle
Action:
[Descending fibers] elevate scapula
[Middle fibers] retract scapula
[Ascending fibers] depress scapula
Rhomboids
Origin:
[Major] SPs of T2-T5
[Minor] Nuchael ligament and SPs of C7-T1
Insertion:
[Major] Medial border of scapula from spine of scapula to inferior angle
[Minor] Smooth triangular area at medial end of scapular spine
Action:
- Retract the scapula
- Fix scapula to thoracic wall
- Depress glenoid cavity inferiorly by rotating scapula
Levator scapulae
Origin:
- Nuchal ligament
- Posterior tubercles of C1-C4
Insertion:
-Medial border of scapula superior to root of spine
Action:
- Elevates scapula
- Depresses glenoid cavity inferiorly by rotating scapula
Latissimus dorsi
Origin:
- Thoracolumbar fascia
- Inferior 3-4 ribs
- SPs T7/8-T12
- Iliac crest
Insertion:
-Floor of intertuberculur surface of the humerus
Action:
- Extends/adducts/medially rotates arm
- Raises trunk to arm when climbing
Pectoralis minor
Origin:
-Coracoid process
Inserts:
-Ribs 3-5 near costal cartilages
Action:
- Assists with deep inspiration
- Stabilizes scapula by moving it inferoanteriorly
Infraspinatus
Origin:
-Infraspinous fossa of the scapula
Insertion:
-middle facet of greater tubercle of humerus
Action:
-Laterally rotates arm
Supraspinatus
Origin:
-Supraspinous fossa of the scapula
Insertion:
-Superior facet of greater tubercle of humerus
Action:
-Initiates abduction of the humerus; assists deltoid
Teres major
Origin:
-Lateral border of scapula at the inferior angle
Insertion:
-Medial lip of bicipital groove
Action:
-Medially rotates arm
Teres minor
Origin:
-Middle part of the lateral border of the scapula
Insertion:
-Inferior facet of the greater tubercle of the humerus
Action:
-Laterally rotates arm
Deltoid
Origin:
- Acromion/spine of scapula
- Lateral 1/3 of clavicle
Insertion:
-Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
Action:
[Anterior] medially rotates/flexes arm
[Middle] abducts arm
[Posterior] laterally rotates/extends arm
-Resists inferior displacement of GH joint
Biceps brachii
Origin:
[Long head] Supraglenoid cavity of the scapula
[Short head] Coracoid process
Insertion:
- Radial tuberosity
- Bicipital aponeurosis
Action:
-Flexes/supinates forearm
Brachialis
Origin:
-Distal half of anterior surface of humerus
Insertion:
-Coronoid process/tuberosity of ulna
Action:
-Flexes forearm in all directions
Coracobrachialis
Origin:
-Coracoid process of scapula
Insertion:
-Middle 1/3 of medial surface of humerus
Action:
- Flexes shoulder
- Adduction
- Stabilizes GH joint
Triceps brachii
Origin:
[Long head]
Infraglenoid cavity of the scapula
[Lateral head] Posterior surface of humerus, superior to radial groove
[Medial head] Posterior surface of humerus, inferior to radial groove
Insertion:
- Proximal end of olecranon
- Fascia of forearm
Action:
- Extends forearm
- Long head stabilizes GH joint; assists shoulder extension/adduction
Subscapularis
Origin:
-Subscapular fossa of the scapula
Insertion:
-Lesser tubercle of the humerus
Action:
-Medially rotates humerus
