The Heavens
Pal-Gwe Il Chung, the 1st poomsae, is represented by KEON, the symbol for “The Heavens.” The sky gives us rain and the sun gives us light to make things grow. Therefore KEON is the beginning of everything on earth, and is a beginning in Tae Kwon Do. Everything must build from a beginning.

Joyfulness
(Lake)
Pal-Gwe EE Chung, the 2nd poomsae, represents the symbol TAE, which means “Joyfulness.” Keep your mind clear, and happy. Express the joy of your new knowledge through your enthusiastic performance of this Poomsae.

The very movement of my body brings me joy. All of my activities are transformed by my inner sense of fulfillment. My happiness increases and makes all that I do seem magical.
Fire
Pal-Gwe Som Chung, the 3rd poomsae, represents the symbol for RI “Fire.” Controlled fire gives mankind light, warmth, enthusiasm, and hope. Som Chung should be done with this enthusiastic strength, passion, and hopefulness in mind.

Thunder
Pal-Gwe Sa Chung, the 4th poomsae, represents the symbol JIN, the character for “Thunder”. Thunder and Lightening are a frightening natural phenomenon, but, if you calm yourself and act bravely in the face of fear and danger, you can overcome that fear in yourself and be better prepared to deal with any danger.

Wind
The 5th poomsae, Pal-Gwe Oh Chung, represents the symbol SEON, the character for “wind.” The two aspects of wind are the fierce storm winds of hurricanes, & tornadoes. And the gentle breezes that caress, and cool us. The actions of this poomsae are sometimes gentle and humble as the breeze, but also fierce and forceful as the storm.

I flow with natural movement, my influence seems gentle yet, when I wish, my power can transform the earth.
Water
Pal-Gwe Yuk Chung, the 6th poomsae, represents the symbol GAM, which is the character for “water.” Water is symbolized by the principles of calm, patience, and perseverance. Water always seeks its way to the sea, overcoming all obstacles in its way by finding a path around, or patiently wearing them down over time. You can overcome the difficulties in training, and in life through patience, perseverance, and self-confidence.

I bring life where I travel. I am persevering, I will follow through regardless, and I will overcome every obstacle or challenge and continue onward.
Top Stop
(Mountain)
The 7th poomsae, Pal Gwe Chil Chung, represents the symbol GAN, the character literally translated as “Top Stop”. Symbolic of the stability of the mountain. Fast actions have their place, but, you should never act in too hasty a manner. Know when to press on, but even more importantly, know when to stop and consolidate your position.

I am grounded in confidence, inner peace is my nature in all circumstances. As the Top Stop, I am the link between Heaven and Earth. My connection is solid and my perspective is always broad.
Earth
The 8th poomsae, Pal-Gwe Pal Chung, represents the symbol “GON”, the character for “Earth.” As the source of all life, it gives of its limitless energy. This poomsae is the last step on the path to becoming a “Dan” holder. Now is the time to draw upon that energy, and better utilize the fundamentals of Tae Kwon Do, to be one with that energy.
