Large cracks. Cause: Application of new coats over old; Slow-drying under coats. Cure: Remove, Repaint
ALLIGATORING
Swelling followed by peeling. Cause: Underlying spots of grease moisture; common in wood, stucco, masonry. Cure: Remove, Repaint
BLISTERING
Surface irregularities due to uneven flow of varnish/paint. Too much varnish. Prevention: Proper Proportions
SAGGING, RUNNING
Discoloration due to soluble color in underlying surface
BLEEDING
Loss of Luster. Cause: Defective undercoats
DEADENING
Due to Few ‘HEAVY’ Coatings. Cure: Sanding, repainting. Prevention: Proper formulation and thorough brushing.
WRINKLING
Powdering. Surface Dusting. Rapid thinning of film. Improper formulation: too much thinner
CHALKING
Due to imperfect attachment. Same causes as blistering
PEELING
Color changes, flatting of gloss. Causes: Poor paint, improper formulation. Cure: Re-paint
SPOT FADING
Fading Color. Cause: Poor paint; Applying paint during high humid/ low temp
WASHING
Irregular color changes after rains. Cure: Rubbing spots with alcohol
STORM SPOTTING
Rough appearance like peel of an orange. Cause: Improper surface cleaning
ORANGE PEEL
Clouding of Lacquer paint due to moisture precipitation. Prevention: Constant temperature and humidity during application
MOISTURE BLUSH
Water/ moisture seeps thru crack; Paint curls and scale off. Cause: Improper paint formulation. Cure: Brush, repaint
CRACKING, SCALING
Minute Cracks. Cause: Improper formulation of undercoats. Prevention: Sufficient drying time between coats. Cure: Wire brush, repaint
