Pain Gate Theory Flashcards

1
Q

What is the pain gate theory?

A

Ascending inhibition “rub it better”
A beta fibres inhibit pain transmission
Descending inhibition “mind over matter”
Mid brain, axons descend to posterior horn of the spinal cord and directly inhibit pain transmission

Q

Why does the pain gate theory apply to manual treatments?

A

When you touch patients you give them a mechanical stimulus that stimulates the A beta fibres then that will inhibitory interneurone to stop the release of substance p and therefore decrease pain transmittance up to the bracon
