Nociceptive pain and the types
Type of pain caused by damage of tissues can lead sharp aching or throbbing. Two types is somatic (pain felt in the surface and more localized) and visceral (felt in the internal organs and a more general area)
Somatosensory system
Perception of touch pain, pressure, temperature, position, movement, vibration
Acute pain
Less than 6 months caused by injury, surgery, illness, trauma or painful medical procedures. Expected to go away but can lead to chronic pain
Chronic Pain
Consistent, constant, intermittent pain which occur with a minimum of 3months, following an injury or no inital injury
Neuropathic pain
Lesions in the PNS which can lead to shooting, burning and stabbing pain. Hurts to touch
Breakthrough pain
Sudden brief flair up in pain from a condition
Idiopathic pain
Chronic pain of unknown origin that lasts 6 months or more
Things that can limit pain (non-pharmacological)
Limit stress: do things that one enjoys
Exercise, relaxation, meditation
Improved diet, sleep
Be able to relate to discuss patient
Be patient centered, dependent on what type of pain, validate their pain and what they have tried
Have better explaining to explain the process
