Supine position
The patient lies flat on back. Pillows may be used under the head, knees, and calve to raise heels off the mattress. This position is not used for patients with Dyspnea or at risk for aspiration.
225
Prone position
The patient lies face down. Arms may cushion the head or be flexed. This position is contraindicated after abdominal surgery or for a patient in respiratory distress.
226
Fowler's position
This sitting position raises the patient's head 80-90 degrees. Pillows may be used under the head and arms. This position improves cardiac output and promotes ventilation. It is contraindicated after spinal or brain surgery.
227
Semi-Fowler's position
The patient's head is elevated 30-45 degrees. This position has the same advantages and disadvantages as Fowler's position.
228
Side-lying/lateral position
The patient lays on the side with the weight on the shoulder and hip. Pillows support and stabilize uppermost leg, arm, head, and back. Good for patients with pressure ulcers. This position is not used after hip replacement and other orthopedic surgery.
229
Sims position
The patient lies on the left side with weight distributed toward the anterior ileum, humerus, and clavicle. This position is used to administer enemas. It is contraindicated in many spine or orthopedic conditions.
230
Dorsal recumbent position
The patient lies supine with legs flexed and rotated outward. This position is often used for vaginal examination but not for abdominal assessment.
231
Lithotomy position
The patient is supine with hips and legs flexed. This is an uncomfortable and embarrassing position which requires draping for privacy. It is used for vaginal and rectal examination and some surgical procedures.
232
Knee-chest position
The patient lies prone with buttocks elevated and knees drawn to the chest. This position can accommodate a rectal procedure or examination.
233
Trendelenburg position
The patient is supine with the head 30-40 degrees lower than the foot. This position may be used for postural drainage. It promotes venous return and is often used to remove subclavian and jugular central lines.
