Lie
1. Position (verb) to be in or move into a horizontal position on a surface: to lie in bed, to lie on a beach, to lie on your side.
He lies awake at night, worrying.
Lie
2. Speak falsely (verb) to say or write something which is not true in order to deceive someone.
I suspect he lies about his age.
He asked me how old I was and, lying through my teeth, I said ‘29’.
Lay - put down carefully or put down first. This verb is always followed by an object. Laying is the present participle. Laid is the past simple and the past participle.
She laid the papers on the desk.
I lay down and went to sleep.
rise
At 6 am we watched the sun rise (=appear and move upwards in the sky).
When you put yeast in bread and bake the bread, it rises.
raise
She asked the boss for a pay raise.
Her answers raised doubts / fears / suspicions in my mind.
