Down feather
The down of birds is a layer of fine feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers.
Contour feather
Any of the mainly small feathers that form the outline of an adult bird’s plumage.
Preening
straighten and clean its feathers with its beak.
Lift
The lift force, lifting force or simply lift is the sum of all the forces on a body that force it to move perpendicular to the direction of flow.
Brooding
Brooding, in zoology, pattern of behaviour of certain egg-laying animals, especially birds, marked by cessation of egg laying and readiness to sit on and incubate eggs.
Mammary glands
Any of the milk-producing glands in female mammals, consisting of lobes containing clusters of alveoli with a system of ducts to convey the milk to an external nipple or teat.
Diaphragm
a dome-shaped, muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and so inflates the lungs.
Monotremes
a primitive mammal that lays large yolky eggs and has a common opening for the urogenital and digestive systems.
Marsupial
a mammal of an order whose members are born incompletely developed and are typically carried and suckled in a pouch on the mother’s belly.
Placental mammal
any member of the mammalian group characterized by the presence of a placenta.
Gestation period
Fetal development period from the time of conception until birth. For humans, the full gestation period is normally 9 months.
