PAG 9: Qualitative tests Flashcards
Biuret test tests for:
Proteins
Iodine test tests for:
Starch
Emulsion test tests for:
Lipids
Benedicts Test tests for:
- Reducing Sugars
- Non-Reducing sugars
Test strips test for:
Glucose
Biuret test method:
- Add sodium hydroxide solution.
- Add copper (II) sulphate solution.
Iodine test method:
- Add iodine in potassium iodine solution.
Emulsion test method:
- Add ethanol.
- Pour solution into water.
Benedict’s test for Reducing sugars method:
- Add benedict’s reagent to a sample and heat in a water bath to a boil.
Benedict’s Test for Non-Reducing sugars method:
- Add dilute HCl.
- Put in a water bath brought to a boil.
- Neutralise with sodium hydrogen carbonate.
- Do Benedict’s test for reducing sugars.
Test strips method:
Dip test strips in solution.
Biuret test positive result
Blue –> purple
Iodine test positive
Brown-orange –> blue-black
Emulsion positive
Milky colour
Benedict’s test positive
Sample goes from blue (to green to yellow to orange) to brick red precipitate, depending on the concentration.
Test strips positive
Colour change will occur if glucose is present. Compare to chart of known colour changes to check for concentration.
