How is development measured and when should abnormalities be investigated?
- Gross motor
- Fine motor
- Speech, language and hearing
- Social, emotional and behavioural
Each domain is measured against the average for the child’s age group. Should be investigated when outside of 2 standard deviations of the mean.
What are some possible causes of delay in gross motor development?
- Cerebral palsy
- Most common motor disorder in childhood
- Non-progressive lesion in a developing brain
- Pre-natal/peri-natal/post-natal
- Abnormal motor control and tone
- Vision, hearing, fine and gross motor, cognitive
- Brain malformations and genetic conditions
- Muscle diseases
- Foetal alcohol syndrome
