Q
You see an unresponsive child/infant/neonate, what steps do you carry out?
A
Response?:
- ensure child is safe
- gently stimulate child & “are you alright?” - do NOT shake infant
If unresponsive:
- “HELPPP!!”
- Head-Tilt-Chin-lift (jaw thrust when there is difficulty opening airway)
Not breathing normally?
- 5 rescue breaths
No signs of life?
- 15 chest compression, 2 rescue breaths, 15 chest compressions….

How to carry out chest compressions on a child
A
- Hand position at lower half of the sternum
- Compression depth 1/3rd of child’s chest
- 100-120bpm
- allow chest to fully recoil
- 15:2 compression to rescue breath ratio
- minimal interruptions
- ensure child is safe and in a flat surface

What 3 things are you looking for to assess breathing quickly and effectively?
A
- Feel for air in your cheek
- Listen for breath sounds coming from child’s mouth
- Look for chest wall movement

How to perform rescue breaths on an infant
A
Pinch noise, cover mouth with yours, blow steadily, allow recoil of the chest
