Q

You see an unresponsive child/infant/neonate, what steps do you carry out?

A

Response?:

  • ensure child is safe
  • gently stimulate child & “are you alright?” - do NOT shake infant

If unresponsive:

  • “HELPPP!!”
  • Head-Tilt-Chin-lift (jaw thrust when there is difficulty opening airway)

Not breathing normally?

  • 5 rescue breaths

No signs of life?

  • 15 chest compression, 2 rescue breaths, 15 chest compressions….

How to carry out chest compressions on a child

A
  • Hand position at lower half of the sternum
  • Compression depth 1/3rd of child’s chest
  • 100-120bpm
  • allow chest to fully recoil
  • 15:2 compression to rescue breath ratio
  • minimal interruptions
  • ensure child is safe and in a flat surface

What 3 things are you looking for to assess breathing quickly and effectively?

A
  1. Feel for air in your cheek
  2. Listen for breath sounds coming from child’s mouth
  3. Look for chest wall movement

A

Pinch noise, cover mouth with yours, blow steadily, allow recoil of the chest
