packet 1 part 2 Flashcards
alimentary canal organs
from esophagus to large intestine have same 4 tissue tunic layers
mucosa
innermost moist membrane layer that lines cavity/lumen of organs
function of mucosa
absorption of digested food
secretion of mucus
digestive enzymes + hormones
protect against infectious diseases
mucosa is made of
surface epithelium with goblet cells for secretion (except for esophagus, has strat. squa. epi.)
small amount of loose areolar CT w/ capillaries to nourish epithelium + absorb nutrients
MALT (mucosa associated lymphatic tissue) to defend against pathogens
scanty SMM layer that produces local movements of mucosa
submucosa
beneath mucosa
function of submucosa
vascular supply to mucosa
protection
submucosa is made of
soft dense CT w/ blood/nerve vessels + lymph nodules + lymphatic vessels
elastic fibers to expand/contract stomach depending on food amt.
muscularis externa
outer to submucosa
SMM layer
function of muscularis externa
churning, mixing, propulsion of food along tract
muscularis externa is made of
inner circular layer of SMM
outer longitudinal layer of SMM
third oblique muscle layer inner to circular (only in stomach)
sphincters
valves made by thickening of circular layer
prevents backflow + controls food passage from one organ to another
