pack Flashcards
What are reticular fibers? What are they made of?
They are made of collagen type 3, and form a fine and delicate support mesh unlike other collagen fibers which form thick bundles.
(bc they are particular in how they form)
What are some places that reticular fibers are found in?
lymph nodes, spleen, and bonemarrow
What are elastic fibres and what do they contain?
Contain: The protien elastin.
What they are: Fibers that have the ability to stretch and return back to their orignal shape. (Like elastic bands)
What are the organs that elastin can be found in?
Anywhere that needs to be stretched regularly like the skin, lungs and large arteries
What are the stains that are used to see elastic fibers?
orcein or verhoff’s stain
What is the ground substance?
gel like substance that fills the space between fibers and cells in the CT.
(Like grout or bondo)
What is ground substance made-up of?
Water, Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), proteoglycans, glycoprotiens.
What are the types of connective tissue?
mesenchymal,
.
mucous
.
conncetive tissue proper (loose and dense)
.
Dense can be regular or irregular.
What is mesenchymal connective tissue? Where is it found? What is special about it?
Consists of: Star shaped cells within a ground substance.
.
Found in: Embryos.
.
It is the precursor to all other types of connective tissues.
(bc mese is like masa that’s y it is star shaped and is the precursor)
What is the mucous ct? where is it found?
Found: umblical cord.
What are the types of connective tissue proper?
Loose and dense
What are the characteristics of loose connective tissue? (areolar)
Found: Under epithelial layers
Characterstic:Loose arrangement of fibers and cells which provides flexibility and support
What are the characteristics of dense connective tissue?
high density of fibers
What are the two types of dense connective tissue
Dense regular and dense irregular
What are the characteristics of dense regular connective tissue
aligned in parallel, which gives it strength in one direction
Like: Tendons and ligaments
What are the characteristics of dense irregular connective tissue
Fibers arranged randomly, which gives it strength in multiple directions.
Like the dermis of the skin
What are ehlers-danlos syndromes?
A group of disorders where there’s a defect in collagen synthesis leading to hyperelastic skin, hypermobile joints, and a higher risk of injury because the connective tissues are weak.
What are sarcomas?
maligant tumors that originate in connective tissues and effect different types of tissues like: bones (osteosarcoma), fat (liposarcoma).
What are myofibroblasts?
Cells that play a crucial role in wound healing and scars
