PA31 Systems and Powerplants Flashcards
Airplane/airframe
Aluminium structure
Conventional semimonocoque structure
Wing is all metal, cantilever, semi monocoque structure
Engines
Avco lycoming TIO-540-J
Left engine rotates clockwise. Right engine anti-clockwise
6 cylinder 350hp each @ 2575 rpm
Geared starters, single drive dual magnetos 28v 70amp alternators, shielded ignition, turbochargers, hydraulic pumps, oil filters, oil coolers, pneumatic pressure pumps and three bladed propellers
Propellers
Hartzell three bladed, Constant speed, controllable pitch and full feathering. Controlled by propeller governor mounted on each engine.
A combo of nitrogen or air pressure. A spring blade counter weights and governor regulated oil pressure is utilised for pitch change. High pitch course. Low pitch forward
Flight controls
Closed circuit cable systems
Primary controls are conventional operated by dual control wheels and rudder pedals which operates ailerons and elevators. Rudder is rudder and nose wheel steering.
Secondary is by aileron, elevator and rudder trim tabs.
Flaps
Airfoil switch to right of pedestal.
Operates electric motor under floorboards in cabin. In line with flap. Microswitches limit up and down travel.
Landing Gear
Hydraulically actuated, retractable tricycle landing gear. Gear incorporates air-oil oleo struts
Brake system
Hydraulically actuated by individual master cylinders mounted left set of rudder pedals. Hydraulic reservoir supplies each cylinder.
Brakes are self adjusting, single disc, single housing, triple piston assemblies.
Hydraulic System
Consists of two hydraulic pumps, power pack, emergency hand pump, actuating cylinders and filters.
Pumps engine driven mounted on rear of each engine.
Fuel System
Fuel cells, engine driven and emergency fuel pumps, fuel boost pumps, control valves, fuel filters, fuel pressure and fuel flow gauges. Fuel drains and non icing NACA fuel tank vents.
