Which components of the aircraft use the hydraulic system?

A

Flaps and gears.

How does the hydraulic system work?

A

Hydraulic fluid pressure is supplied to the control unit by an engine-driven pump mounted on the left engine.

Gears have priority over flaps (gear control unit is mounted before the flaps control unit)

When no action is needed, the hydraulic fluid goes freely through the system (bypass).

Handles automatically return to neutral position when flaps or gears are fully down or up.

How long does it take to gears and flaps to go fully down?

A

Flaps take approx. 3 sec.

Gears take 9 to 12 sec.

What if the hydraulic system fails?

A

PA27 is equipped with an emergency hydraulic hand pump, which will provide pressure in the hydraulic system if the pump fails.

About 50 pushs are needed to fully lower the gears.

A

A CO2 system is available to extend the gears in case of complete hydraulic system failure.

What system prevents the retraction of the landing gear when on ground?

A

An oleo-actuated bypass valve is mounted on left main gear to bypass the system while aircraft weight is on the gear.

A

The hydraulic fluid tank is equipped with a standpipe that isolates the leak and keep a minimum amount of fluid in the tank.
