P9 - Motion Flashcards
What is the equation for speed?
Speed(m/s) = Distance(m) * Time(s)
What is velocity?
The speed of an object in a particular direction (it is a vector quantity)
What is acceleration?
The rate of change of velocity (the amount that velocity changes per unit time)
What is the equation for change in velocity?
Change in velocity = final velocity - initial velocity
What is the equation for acceleration?
Acceleration(m/s^2) = change in velocity(m/s) * time taken(s)
In a distance-time graph what is the gradient of the line equal to?
The speed of the object, the steeper the line the faster the object is moving
What do you need to draw on a distance-time graph to measure its speed at a particular time?
A tangent to the curve at the desired time
How do you measure the gradient of the tangent?
Gradient = change in vertical distance * channge in horizontal distance
What is the gradient of a line in a velocity time graph equal to?
Acceleration
What does a straight horizontal line on a velocity time graph represent?
That the object is moving at a constant speed
What does a straight horizontal line on a distance time graph represent?
That the object is stationary
How do you find the displacement of an object using a velocity time graph?
It can be calculated from the area of the triangle and the rectangles under the graph
