Q

Definition of Weight?

A

The force of gravity pulling things downwards. It makes things fall, and keeps things on the ground.

Q

Definition of Reaction?

A

It pushes things upwards when they are in a liquid. It pushes boats upward so that they do not sink.

Q

Definition of Air resistance?

A

It tries to stop things moving through the air. It pushes leaves and parachutes upwards so that they fall slowly.

Q

Definition of Upthrust?

A

It stops things from going right through solid objects. When this force acts from your chair it pushes you upwards so that you do not fall through it.

16
Q

Moment of Gears

A

Force x gear radius

17
Q

Centre of mass

A

Centres of mass typically lie on lines (or planes) of symmetry of objects.

18
Q

Principle of moments

A

The sum of all the clockwise moments about any point = The sum of all the anticlockwise moments about that point

19
Q

How to find the horizontal and vertical components of a force.

A

Horizontal = Force x cos (angle)
Vertical = Force x sin (angle)

20
Q

How do you find the centre of mass of an irregular shape?

A

You would hang the shape, made out of card, from a thread with a plumb line attached to it and you will use a pencil and ruler to draw the line that the plumb line makes on the piece of card and rotate the card and repeat the process. The lines will all meet on one point, and that is the centre of mass
