P8,9 & 10 Flashcards
What is a vector?
A vector is a quantity that has a magnitude and a direction
Examples of vector quantities
Force, velocity, displacement, acceleration, momentum, etc.
What are scalar quantities
Quantities that only have a magnitude and no direction
Examples of some scalar quantities
Speed, distance, mass, temperature, time, etc.
How are vectors represented in a diagram?
Usually represented by an arrow and the length of the arrow is the magnitude and the direction that the arrow is facing is the direction of the quantity
What is a force?
A force is a push or a pull on an object that is caused by it interacting with something.
***Forces are either contact or non-contact forces
What is a contact force? Give a few examples.
A contact force is a force when 2 objects have to be touching for a force to act
*e.g. friction, air resistance, tension in ropes, normal contact force, etc.
What is a non-contact force? Give a few examples.
A non-contact force is whenever objects don’t have to be touching for the forces to act.
*e.g. magnetic force, gravitational force, electrostatic force, etc.
What is an interaction pair?
A pair of forces that are equal and opposite and act on two interacting objects.
(Basically Newton’s 3rd law)
What are the two important effects of gravity on a planet?
• On the surface of the planet, it makes everything fall towards the ground
• It gives everything a weight
What is gravitational force?
It is the force of attraction between masses
*** Weight and masses are not the same
What is mass?
The amount of ‘stuff’ in an object
What is weight?
The amount of force acting upon an object due to gravity close to earth.
