P7 - Magnetism + Electromagnetism Flashcards
What is a magnet and what are the 3 magnetic elements?
A Magnet is an object that has
a magnetic field around it.
Iron, cobalt and nickel are magnetic
What is a magnetic field?
A magnetic field is an area
where magnetic objects
experience a force.
What does the magnetic field around a bar magnet look like and where is it the strongest?
The magnetic field is the strongest at the poles where the field lines are the closest.
What does the magnetic field
around a current carrying wire look
like?
The magnetic field goes in circles around the current
If you put 2 north poles of some
magnets next to each what will they
do?
Same poles repel and opposite
poles attract
What is a solenoid?
A coiled up piece of wire
What are the 3 types of magnet called?
1 – Induced magnet
2 – Permanent magnet
3 - Electromagnet
What is the advantage of an
electromagnet?
You can turn them on and off by
switching a current on or off
How are induced magnets
different from permanent and
electromagnets?
1 - Induced magnets ALWAYS
cause a force of attraction. They
do NOT repel.
2 - They also lose their magnetism
when removed from a magnetic
field
How do you increase the strength of an electromagnet?
1 – Add an iron core
2 – Increase the current
3 – Add more coils
How would you make an electric
motor spin in the opposite direction?
You would reverse the direction
of the current or change the
direction of the magnetic field.
