P7 Flashcards
Nuclear Radiation is
When the nucleus of an atom emits radiation because it is unstable. It would be unstable because there would be too many protons, nuetrons or its too large
A radioactive substance is and why?
When the nucleus of an atom wmits radiation because it is unstable.
- this would be because it has either too many protons, too many neurons or its to big
Alpha particles are made of and whats ita charge and its mass
- 2 protons and 2 neutrons.
- charge of 2+
- mass of 4.
Alpha particle: 4
2
When an atom emits alpha decay the nucleus loses
2 protons and 2 neutrons
What is a beta particle?
Beta particles is an electron created and emitted by a nucleus which has too many neutrons compared to protons.
- mass = 0
- charge = -1
- a nuetron turns into a proton, emitting a beta particle at high speeds instantly from the nucleus.
- beta particle 0
-1
What would be produced when a potassium-40 decays emitting a beta particle?
Potassium40. ——–> Ca40/20 + B 0/-1
19.
Because nuetrons change to protons the -1 becomes +1 so you make the 19, 20 and its Ca
What would be produced when a thorium-228 decays emitting an alpha particle
Th 228. »_space;»» 224 Ra. + 4 a
