P6: Waves Flashcards
Waves (definition):
Something that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter
Transverse waves:
- It causes the particles in the medium to vibrate at right angles to the direction of the waves motion
Longitudinal waves:
A longitudinal wave causes the medium particles to vibrate in the in the same direction as the wave’s motion
Amplitude (definition)
[2]:
- The largest distance that a point on a wave moves from its rest position
- measured in metres
Wavelength (definition)
[2]:
- The distance between two adjacent wavefronts
- Measured in metres
Oscillation (definition):

Describe the image produced by the plane mirror:
Laterally inverted and a virtual image
What is a virtual image?
An image that cannot be projected onto a screen
What is the speed of light in a vacuum?
Light has a constant speed of 200,000 km/s in a vacuum
Refractive index (equation):
Speed in a vacuum
———————————————-
Speed of light through material
Wave speed(equation):
Wave speed= wavelength x frequency
What can gamma rays be used for?
- To kill harmful bacteria in food and on surgical instruments
- This is because they
