p6 waves Flashcards
what is the EM spectrum
radio
micro
infared
visible light
UV
X-Ray
Gamma
what is an example of longitudinal waves
sound waves in air
what is an example of a transverse wave
waves on a string
EM waves
how do you measure waves in a ripple tank
use signal generator attatched to a dipper
dim lights and turn on lamp
measure distance between waves that are 10 wavelengths apart divide by 10 to find 1 wavelength
how to measure speed of sound
set up oscilloscope so that detected waves are shown as seperate
start with microscopes next to speaker and slowly move apart
measure distance between microphones to find 1 wavelength
what are radio waves used for
communication
how do EM waves travel
they all travel at the same speeds through air and vacuums
what happens when a wave is absorbed
wave transfers energy to the materials stores
what happens when a wave is transmitted
wave travels through the new materials often leads to refraction
what happens when a wave is reflected
sent back away from the second material echoes created
what is the walking speed
1.5m/s
what is the running speed
3m/s
Cycling
6 m/s
car
25m/s
train
30m/s
