P6: Molecules & Matter Flashcards
What is the formula for the density of a material?
Density = mass(kg) / volume (m^3)
What is latent heat?
The energy needed for a substance to change state
When a change of state occurs, what does the energy supplied change?
The internal energy, not the temperature
What is the formula for latent heat?
Energy / mass
What is specific latent heat of fusion?
Change of state from solid to liquid?
What describes the process of a liquid changing into a gas?
Specific latent heat of vapourisation
What is specific latent heat?
The amount of energy required to change the state of one kg of the substance with no change in temperature
What does doing work on a gas do?
Increases the internal energy of the gas can cause an increase in temperature of the gas
Why do changes in state not change the mass at all?
Because the number of particles remain the same
Why would the density be more accurate if the volume of the liquid is larger?
Because it minimises the effects of uncertainty
What is density?
A measure of how much mass a substance has per unit of its volume.
What does the horizontal part on a cooling graph represent?
The formation of new bonds, which releases energy
What does latent heat of a substance depend on?
The type of substance, and the amount of it
What is the relationship between pressure and volume?
They are inversely proportional
