P6 - Molecules and Matter Flashcards
formula density
density = mass / volume
D = M / V
formula specific latent heat
SLH
specific latent heat = energy / mass
SLH = E / m

define latent heat
The total energy absorbed or emitted by a substance while it changes state.
name the 2 types of latent heat
- latent heat of fusion
- latent heat of vapourization
define latent heat of fusion
The total energy required to change a substance from a solid to a liquid.
define latent heat of vapourization
The total energy required to change a substance from a liquid to a gas.
define specific latent heat
The energy transferred to 1 kg of a substance to change its state.
How do particles move in a fluid?
Particles move with a random motion.
brownian motion
formula Boyle’s law
pressure * volume = constant
what does Boyle’s law show
Boyle’s Law states that for a gas at a constant temperature, pressure × volume is also constant. So, increasing pressure means that volume will decrease providing that the temperature remains constant.
