p6 molecules and matter Flashcards
1
Q
what is the density of a substance?
A
its mass per unit volume
2
Q
how do you calculate density?
A
mass / volume
3
Q
what is the unit for density?
A
kilograms per metre cubed
4
Q
explain how to measure the density of a liquid
A
- use a measuring cylinder to measure the volume of a particular amount of liquid
- measure the mass of an empty beaker using an electronic balance
- remove the beaker from the balance and pour the liquid into the beaker
- use the balance again to measure the total mass of the beaker and the liquid
- calculate the mass of the liquid by subtracting the mass of the empty beaker from the total mass of the beaker and the liquid
- calculate the density by dividing the mass by the volume
5
Q
what is internal energy?
A
the total kinetic energy and potential energy of all the particles that make up a system
6
Q
what is the melting point?
A
the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid
7
Q
what is the boiling point?
A
the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas
8
Q
what is the freezing point?
A
the temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid
9
Q
what is latent heat?
A
the energy transferred to a substance when it changes its state
