Q

How does a dimmer switch work?

A

It has a contact that moves around a circular coil of wire. The length of the wire changes, therefore resistance changes and current changes. This affects the brightness of the light.

Q

What affects resistance? (3)

A

1) Its length. longer = more resistance
2) Its cross-sectional area. thin = more resistance
3) The material its made from.

Q

What happens when electrons flow in a wire and what does increased vibration mean?

A

When electrons flow in a wire they collide with the atoms in the wire making them vibrate more.
Increased vibration means-
- Increased number of collisions so increased resistance,
-Increased temperature of the wire.

Q

How does a bulb glow?

A

electrons flow and collide with atoms making them vibrate more. Increased number of collisions so increased resistance. Increased temperature of wire. This causes the filament to get hot and so it glows.

16
Q

What can two or more resistors do in a circuit?

A

They can be used as a potential divider and the output voltage will depend on the values of those resistors.

17
Q

What is threshold voltage?

A

Some electronic components will only start working at a threshold voltage. If a variable resistor is used as part of the circuit then the threshold voltage can be set.

18
Q

What happens to LDR’s when light intensity increases?

A

The resistance of the LDR will decrease.

19
Q

What is LDR?

A

Light- dependent resistor.
