P6 Flashcards
What is density ?
How closely packed the particles are in a solid, liquid or gas.
Defined as its mass per unit volume
What is the equation for density ?
Density (p) = mass, (m) (kg) / volume (m3)
How do you measure the density of irregular solids ?
Lower the solid into a measuring cylinder / eureka can with thread or by hand then measure the water rise / loss
What is conservation of mass ?
When a substance changes state, the number of particles in the substance stays unchanged So the mass of the substance after the change of state is the same as before
What happens to a pure substances’s temperature undergoing a change of state
The temperature stays the same while the change of state is taking place
What happens to a pure substances’s temperature undergoing a change of state
The temperature stays the same while the change of state is taking place
What is latent heat ?
The energy transferred to a substance when it changes its state
What is internal energy ?
The energy stored by the particles of a substance
What is internal energy ?
The energy stored by the particles of a substance
The internal energy of the particles is the sum of…
- The kinetic energy they have due to motion of individual particles
- The potential energy the particles have due to their position
How do you calculate specific latent heat of fusion/vaporisation ?
Specific latent heat (L) (J/kg) = Energy (J) / mass (kg)
