P6 Flashcards
rank the states of matter according to their density
solid is most dense
then liquid
gas
particle arrangments of the 3
solid - close , regular ,vibrate round fixed position, low energy
liquid - close , randomly arranged, move round each other , bit more energy
gas - far apart , random, move quickly in all directions , highest energy
density equation and unit
mass
———
volume
kilogram per cubic meter
volume of a cube
Volume of a cube = side times side times side.
how would u find the density of a regular shape
height in centimeters. Multiply the three dimensional values together. The units will be expressed as cm3.
how would u find the density of a liquid
density of a liquid equals the mass of the liquid divided by its volume
give the name for each change of state
solid - liquid
liquid - gas
gas - liquid (condensation)
how does change of state effect the mass of a substance
The number of particles does not change during a change of state, only their spacing and arrangement. As a result, the total mass has not changed
how is a physical change different from a chemical one
In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes but the kind of matter in the substance does not. However in a chemical change it does
the 3 differences between boiling and evaporation
evaporation is slower, occurs only from the surface of the liquid, does not produce bubbles, and leads to cooling.
internal energy
energy contained within it.
what 2 aspects make up the internal energy
two different stores of energy: kinetic and potential
which state of matter has the most internal energy
gas
then liquid
then solid
how does heating change the internal energy of a state of matter
raise the temperature , particles speed up and they gain kinetic energy.
whats specific latent heat and what unit is it
amount of energy needed to change the state of 1 kg of the substance without changing its temperature
