P5.1 Reactivity Series Flashcards
What is the pH scale, and what are its minimum and maximum values?
The pH scale is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is. It ranges from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline).
What happens to most metals in ores and how they combined
Most metals ores are chemically bonded to other elements in compounds. Many of these metals have been oxodised by oxygen in the air to form oxides
Iron+oxygen = iron oxide
What happens to reactivity of metals in group 1 when mixed with water
The reactivity of metals increases you go down group 1 so potassium most reactive then sodium then lithium.
Magnesium lies somewhere between copper and lithium in reactivity series. So if magneisum is left in a beaker of water, it takes serveral days to get nough gas witha lighted spill. The ‘pop shows the gas is a hydrogen
Pottasium, sodium, lithium, calcium reaction with water and dilute acid
Water-fizzing, giving of hydrogen gas, leaving an alkaline solution of metal hydroxide
Dilute acid-explode
Magnesium, aliminium, zinc, iron reaction with water and dilute acid
Water-very slow reaction
Dilute acid-fizz,giving of hydrogen gas and forming a salt
Tin and lead reaction with water and dilute acid
Water-slight resction with steam
Reaction with dilute acid-react slowly
