P5 - Vision Flashcards
1
Q
What is the primary function of rods?
A
rods
- -> contrast (light and dark)
- -> responsible for night vision
2
Q
What is the primary function of cones?
A
cones
- -> colour differentiation
- -> 3 sets of cones with peak sensitivities at light wavelengths of 564 nm (red), 534 nm (green) and 420 nm (blue)
3
Q
2 types of photoreceptors?
A
rods and cones
4
Q
What is the fovea?
A
fovea
- -> region of highest visual acuity
- -> mostly cones
5
Q
Where are rods found?
A
rods
- -> evenly distributed throughout retina
- -> except in the fovea where it is not found at all!
6
Q
What causes the blind spot?
A
blind spot
–> the optic disc where nerves and retinal blood cells enter and exit is devoid of photoreceptors
7
Q
What generates 65-70% of focusing power of the eye?
A
the cornea (avascular transparent epithelial layer at outer surface of the eye)
8
Q
What is the retina?
A
retina
- -> light sensitive tissue that lines the inner surface of the eye
- -> contains photoreceptors
