P5 Space for reflection Flashcards
Why are planets orbit time around the sun shorter if they are closer
Because they have a shorter distance to travel and because the planet travels faster with it being closer to the sun, giving it a greater gravitational force
How do satellites move
They move at a tangent and then gravity makes it accelerate towards earth
What are some properties about polar orbit stall items
They orbit above the north and south poles, just 100km - 20km above the earth, normally take about 90 minutes to orbit the earth, they are used for imaging the earth, like for short-range weather forecasting
What are some properties of geostationary satellites
They orbit above the equator, take 24 hours to orbit and therefore appears to always be in my one place above the equator, these stall it’s are used for communications and they all have the same orbit but they can’t be too close together as their signals would overlap due to diffraction
What is the difference between a scalar and a vector
A scalar quantity only has magnitude, whereas a vector quantity has both magnitude and direction
Look at adding non-linear vectors and equations of motion in revision guide and notes
Pg 41
What is the principle used to put satellites into orbit from Isaac Newton
If the ball was kicked hard enough from a very tall peak it would never hit the ground because it would stay in orbit, this is because gravity would make the ball fall to earth but the ball would never reach earth due to the curvature or the earth
What 2 things affect gravitational force
The mass of the object and the distance away from an object
What happens to a ball thrown horizontally from a tower and a ball dropped from a tower
They will fall to the ground at the same rate - the trajectory of the ball going horizontally is called parabolic
Forces always occur in pairs, give an example of the action and reaction pairs of forces
They are equal in magnitude, opposite in direction and act in different objects
Give an example of action and reaction in pairs
When a gun is shot, there is a force on the bullet so it goes forward, however there is also recoil due to the gun moving backwards
What does the momentum of an object depend on
Mass and velocity
Why is there an increase in pressure if the same amount of gas particles are in a smaller container
Because the particles hit the walls of the Container more often building up pressure
How is a large massed rocket moving ups momentum balanced
Because hot gases move down as it is the high velocity of the exhaust gases
What does constructive interference mean
That the wave meet in phase
