P4.1.1 - Magnets and magnetic fields Flashcards
What is a magnet?
Any object that has a magnetic field around it
What are the 2 poles of a magnet?
The north pole and the south pole
The closer the field lines in a magnet…
the stronger the magnet
What is a permanent magnet?
A magnet which always has a magnetic field around it
How can you show the shape of the magnetic fields?
By using iron filings
When do non-magnets induced in them?
When a the permanent magnet it brought close to it
Does the Earth have a magnetic field?
Yes
What the similarities between the Earth’s magnetic and gravitational field?
- They are both non-contact forces
- Gravitational is only attractive but Magnetic is attractive and gravitational
How do you know that the magnetic field of a magnet is stronger near the poles?
Because the field lines are closer together
